About Hirsutism
Hirsutism means excess hair. Hirsutism can be defined as
excessive
growth of hair in places where it is usually minimal or absent.
The term hirsutism is restricted to the male type of hair growth in women.
These places at the body are called androgen stimulated areas and they
include areas like face, chest and areola among others.
To put it in simple terms, growth of hair on the face, chest and areola
in men is normal; growth of hair in those places in women is abnormal
and is called hirsutism.
The causes of concern about hirsutism on one hand are its cosmetic
effect with frequently associated psychological distress including poor
self esteem. On the other hand hirsutism may be associated with serious
medical problems.
